In charts: How BJP delivers a hat-trick despite tough battle with Congress

The high-stakes assembly election in Haryana came to a close, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning a third term in the state with a bigger seat tally. The party won 48 seats, crossing the majority mark of 46, despite tough competition from the Indian National Congress (INC)

In a major upset, the Congress, which was seen making a comeback in the state by exit polls, managed to win only 37 seats. The BJP’s win has come despite Congress also capturing nearly an equal share of votes in the state. Congress received 39.1% vote share, while the BJP got 39.9%.

The BJP won eight more seats than in the previous elections held in 2019 when it had to cobble together a post-poll alliance to form the government.

The BJP also won with a significant margin in several constituencies, solidifying its position. The party is leading with a 5-15% margin in 20 constituencies and a 15-30% margin in 15.

For women, the Haryana election was another one with poor representation. Out of the 100 women who contested the polls, only 13 managed to win. BJP's Bimla Chaudhary won from Pataudi with a huge margin of 29.47% and Savitri Jindal from Hisar with a margin of 16.84%. Former wrestler Vinesh, a key candidate from Julana, won with a 4.33% margin but was not among the top five women candidates by victory margin.

Voting for all 90 seats was done in a single phase on 5 October.

After the disappointment faced by the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections, Haryana results are a shot in the arm of the party, and can very well set a comfortable stage for the key upcoming polls: Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Delhi, and Bihar.
