US President Joe Biden will host the fourth Quad Leaders Summit in Wilmington, Delaware, on September 21, the White House announced on Thursday (local time). President Joe Biden said he looks forward to welcoming the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Prime Minister of Japan, Kishida Fumio, to the meeting.

The White House notice stated that the Quad Leaders Summit 2024 will be Biden's first time hosting foreign leaders in Wilmington as president. 

The Quad summit is a “reflection of his (Biden's) personal relationships with each of the Quad Leaders and the importance of the Quad to all of our countries,” read the statement from the White House.

Quad Summit 2024: 5 points to know

  1. The Quad Leaders' Summit 2024 would be the last gathering with current leaders, as both Joe Biden and Japan's Fumio Kishida plan to step down from office. Biden announced in July 2024 that he would not seek re-election to the White House.
  2. The Japanese Prime Minister also said he will not seek re-election as the head of the Liberal Democratic Party.
  3. The White House statement noted that the Quad Summit would focus on bolstering ties, aiming for a “free and open Indo-Pacific region.” The Summit will also aim to provide “concrete benefits” for Quad partners in the areas of health security, natural disaster response, maritime security, and high-quality infrastructure.

4. India will be hosting the next Quad Summit following the US meeting.

5. To date, the Quad Foreign Ministers have met eight times, as the Quad governments continue to meet and coordinate at all levels.

What is the Quad Summit

The 'Quadrilateral Security Dialogue' (QSD) is an informal strategic forum comprising four key members the United States of America (USA), India, Australia, and Japan.

The Quad was established for the first time in 2007. Former Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, was the first to propose its formation in 2007.
