Radical Sikh preacher and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh's brother Harpreet Singh has been held by Jalandhar police in a drug case. A senior official told news agency PTI that “four grams of ICE (methamphetamine) drug was recovered from him during checking of the car in which the duo was travelling.” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ankur Gupta, Jalandhar Dehat Police said, “Three people identified as Lovepreet, Harpreet and Sandeep Arora have been arrested. They were arrested last night,” as quoted by ANI.
Singh, aged 30-35, "was into some dispatching work in transport", he said as quoted by PTI.
Calling it a conspiracy, Amritpal Singh’s father Tarsem Singh told PTC News, “This is a conspiracy against our family, aides and supporters of Amritpal Singh. We have already apprehended that the government could hatch this conspiracy to defame us. Governments are doing this to hide their failures. This is aimed at derailing the mission of Amritpal Singh of saving the youth and creating hurdle in the release of the Bandi Singhs.”
He added, “This is nothing new. We already knew that the Punjab police have a history of involvement in fake encounters and false charges.”
Meanwhile, Amritpal Singh is currently lodged in jail in Assam's Dibrugarh district. In the recent 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Singh had contested and won as an independent candidate from the Khadoor Sahib parliamentary seat in Punjab. He posted a massive margin of 1,97,120 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Kulbir Singh Zira of Congress. Singh was arrested by Punjab police in April last year, weeks after he evaded police and a stringent National Security Act was invoked against him. On July 5, the Jailed Waris Punjab De activist was taken to New Delhi by special aircraft on for his swearing-in as an MP.
