The Indian Meteorological Department( IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall to continue over Northwest and East India, till July 7 and over Northeast India from July 9 to 10, according to their official statement. Coastal Karnataka, and south interior Karnataka is also expected to receive, “Isolated very heavy rainfall” on July 6, and July 7, the Meteorological Department said.
The IMD has issued a red alert for the Dakshin Kannada and Udupi districts of the state. The Kannada District Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan ordered the closure of Anganwadis, schools and pre-university colleges.
"All Anganwadis, schools, and pre-university colleges on July 6, in response to a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for heavy rainfall in the district," reported ANI citing the order.
The district body has further instructed fishermen to avoid fishing activities today. Citizens have also been ordered to not visit low lying areas, as a precautionary measure for the red alert.
“The district administration has taken precautionary measures to ensure public safety, advising citizens and tourists to avoid low-lying areas, river banks, and seashores. Fishermen have also been instructed not to venture into the sea for fishing activities," the district administration’s order stated.
States including West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are likely to receive “isolated heavy rainfall” till July 9, said the IMD. Convective clouds have also been spotted across the areas of Himachal Pradesh, North Punjab, Rajasthan, causing the possibility of “isolated thurnderstorm” and light to moderate rainfall, the IMD wrote on X.
An orange alert for very heavy rains has been issued over East Uttar Pradesh during 05th – 07th July; Punjab, West Uttar Pradesh on 5th and 6th July.
The weather office also predicted very heavy rainfall over West Bengal and Sikkim, Bihar on 6th July, Odisha on 7th July; Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya during 6-9 July.
An orange alert for very heavy rains is also predicted over Konkan and Goa, Coastal Karnataka on July 6, Madhya Maharashtra during 5-7 July; South Interior Karnataka on 6 July.
Apart from these areas, in Chennai, a yellow alert has been issued for today. The weather bulletin dated July 6 stated, “Isolated places over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram and Theni districts of Tamilnadu and Puducherry.”
Heavy rains are also predicted over Himachal Pradesh, Haryana-Chandigarh on 6 July; Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, East Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, West Madhya Pradesh during 5-9 July; Vidarbha on 8 and 9 July; Chhattisgarh during 7-9 July.
Heavy rains are also predicted over over West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar during 7-9 July; Jharkhand on 7 July; Odisha on 6 and 8 July; Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during 5-9 July.
