NIA raids in Punjab over Khalistani Attacks on Indian High Commission in Ottawa

The National Investigation Agency is raiding locations in Punjab as part of its investigation into violent incidents involving Khalistani supporters at the Indian high commission in Ottawa in 2023

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday conducted raids at multiple locations in Punjab in connection with a March 2023 incident when Khalistani supporters protested outside the High Commission of India in Canada's Ottawa.

Currently, raids are being conducted in connection with case RC-17/2023/NIA/DLI in the districts of Moga, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Jalandhar in Punjab, reported ANI.

According to reports, raids have been carried out in the residence of MLA Amritpal Singh's family members, in the Baba Bakala subdivision of Punjab. Amritpal Singh, the 30-year-old Sikh separatist leader, had been arrested by the police in 2023, for reviving calls for an independent Sikh homeland in Punjab.

The first raid took place at the residence of Pragat Singh, Amritpal Singh's uncle. The second raid was carried out at Amritpal's brother-in-law's house, while the third raid was conducted at the home of another relative.

March 2023 protest

During the protest, in March 2023, demonstrators chanted anti-India slogans, attached Khalistani flags to the boundary wall of the High Commission. One of their prominent members also threw two grenades onto the premises, stated a report by ANI.

In June 2023, NIA had filed the First Information Report (FIR) in connection with the case. According to the report, Khalistani supporters, led by Amarjot Singh—brother-in-law of the imprisoned Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh—protested outside the High Commission of India in Ottawa on March 23, 2023.

The mob, led by Amarjot Singh and others, had also engaged in other unlawful activities. He, and several unidentified individuals were named in the case by the NIA.

The Delhi Police's Special Cell initially registered the case on June 8, 2023.

Pro-Khalistani elements at RaGa's US visit

In other news, government sources said that pro-Kahlistani elements were present at Virginia, during Rahul Gandhi's visit to the US on September 12, 2024. Representatives from Baba Makhan Shah Gurdwara in Richmond Hill attended the event which is known for its involvement in anti-India protests.
