Delhi rains: Heavy rains lashed several parts of Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram on Friday morning ahead of the monsoon's official entry into the national capital in the coming days. While the pre-monsoon rain showers brought much-needed relief from the city's scorching summer heat, they caused severe waterlogging and long traffic jams in many parts of the Delhi-NCR region.
The weather forecasting agency said on Thursday that the conditions are likely to improve, creating favourable conditions for the southwest monsoon's advance in Delhi during the next two to three days. Since Thursday night, several parts of Delhi-NCR, including Noida and Gurugram, have been receiving heavy rainfall.
The heavy rains in Delhi resulted in waterlogging in multiple areas of Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram.
Visuals from Noida Sector 95 and Govindpuri showed flooded streets. Key roads in Delhi were severely affected due to continuous rain throughout the night.
News Agency ANI's visual of Delhi's Minto Road showed a car submerged in water and roads heavily flooded due to continuous downpours in Delhi since Thursday night.
The IMD has forecast that the national capital will welcome the monsoon in the next two to three days, providing much-anticipated relief from the summer heat.
The IMD said in a statement that conditions will likely become favourable for the advance of the southwest monsoon in Delhi during the next two to three days. Last year, the monsoon hit Delhi on June 26. It arrived on June 30 in 2022, on July 13 in 2021, and June 25 in 2020, according to IMD data.
Amid heavy rainfall in Delhi, the canopy of a terminal building at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport collapsed on Friday morning. The accident left multiple people injured and one person dead. As a measure, due to the collapse of the Delhi Airport T-1 roof, flight operations from Terminal 1 have been temporarily suspended.
“Eight people have been injured, and one person is dead. Rescue operations have been completed,” news agency AFP quoted Atul Garg, director of Delhi Fire Services.
Light-intensity drizzle and thunderstorms are likely in and adjoining areas of a few places in Delhi (Narela, Bawana, Alipur, Kanjhawala, Mundaka, Jafarpur, Nazafgarh, Dwarka, IGI Airport) and NCR (Bahadurgarh, Noida, Dadri, Greater Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, Manesar, etc) in the next two hours, said the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre in Delhi on Friday.
According to the New Delhi Regional Meteorological Centre's latest bulletin, the Delhi weather is likely to remain humid, with a generally cloudy sky accompanied by moderate rain and thunderstorms.
