CBI court extends D.K. Shivakumar’s ED custody till 17 Sept

New Delhi: A CBI special court on Friday extended D.K. Shivakumar's Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody till 17 September.

Shivakumar was produced before the CBI Court after the expiry of his nine-day Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) K.M. Natraj had argued that the senior Congress leader was evasive with his replies during the interrogation and needs to explain the sources of his deposits.

Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Shivakumar, said that he is co-operating with the investigation agency. He pleaded that the leader needs to be admitted to a hospital as he is not well. He further told the court that his daughter was also interrogated by ED and that Shivakumar is ready to be interrogated whenever required.

The Special CBI Court on 4 September had sent the Congress leader to Enforcement Directorate custody till 13 September in connection with a money laundering case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Allegations against him are serious, source of money and interests in other properties require to be investigated, the special judge had said the last time he was sent to ED custody.

"He has to be confronted with voluminous incriminating material and other crucial aspect of the case with regard to the source of money and his further interest in the other properties and accounts. Therefore, I considered it to be a fit case for grant of custody of the accused to Enforcement Directorate," reads the previous order.

"Pursuant to summons issued to him, he appeared...but he remained evasive and did not reveal the truth," Nataraj, appearing for ED, had submitted.

The Congress leader was arrested by the ED after almost four days of rigorous interrogation over charges of money laundering.
